Career Exploration Program
Our Career Exploration program aims to provide students in Hawai'i and U.S Affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI) with an in-person exploration of a career in governmental environmental public health.
The program:
- Is a 200-hour paid opportunity, 5–10-weeks (choose full or part-time) with host site
- Provides shadowing, field experience, and the opportunity to assist with projects
- Matches students with local environmental public health agencies
Student Benefits
$6,000 for student participants through funding from CDC for the 200-hour experience
- A one-year ßÏÀÖÔ° student membership and virtual access to our Annual Education Conference (AEC)

Student Eligibility
To be considered as a participant for this program, students must meet the following requirements:
- Attend a college level academic program with a focus on environmental health, public health, or similar, in Hawai'i and the U.S. Affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI), including the Hawai'i islands, American Samoa, Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, Republic of the Marshall Islands, and Republic of Palau
- Be willing to submit a current resume and unofficial transcript
- If selected, be willing to commit 200-hours to working with the host site you are matched with
We have a limited number of spots available for the summer 2026 program, and we are prioritizing applications from students who apply by March 01, 2026.

To be considered for placement in the Career Exploration Program, students must provide:

Host Site Details
Host sites help students learn about the roles and responsibilities of the environmental public health workforce. As part of the program, host sites:
- Provide 200 hours of job shadowing, field experience, and mentorship in environmental public health
- Provide the student with a thorough introduction to the organization and assist them in following all policies and procedures
- Oversee completion of experience hours

Host Site Benefits
By participating in our Career Exploration Program, host sites:
- Help to build the next generation of qualified applicants for state, tribal, local, and territorial (STLT) environmental public health roles
- Receive a support package of up to $1,500 per student for reimbursement of supplies or materials related to the experience
